It is with great pleasure that the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce announces the selection of Dr. Hazel Hill as its 2006 ATHENA Award recipient. She is being recognized for her professional accomplishments, community service and her role in helping other women in the community attain success. This prestigious award honors outstanding professional women who encourage an environment where providing assistance, inspiration and mentoring to women is uniquely valued.

Dr. Hazel Hill earned a B.A. in Home Economics Education, an M.S. in Home Economics and an Ed.D. in Vocational Technical Education. She has spent a number of years as both an instructor and administrator at various levels of education prior to promotion as Dean of Workforce and Economic Development at San Joaquin Delta College. In this position, she has oversight responsibilities for all of the College’s vocational education programs, CalWORKs, Community Education and the Small Business Development Center. In addition she has direct responsibilities for Contract Education and the Vocational and Technical Education Act, Tech-Prep and Environmental Technology grants. Prior to her present position, she was the Division Chairperson for the Family, Consumer and Health Science Division which included: Child and Family Studies; Interior Design; Fashion Merchandising; Apparel Design; Food Service Industry; Life Management; Nutrition and Food, and all of the Health Science Programs.

As a graduate of the first Leadership Stockton Program Dr. Hill demonstrated a conviction that community service is a lifelong process and does not end with the completion of a particular course. Dr. Hill was a driving force behind bringing the Caterpillar Dealer Service Technician Program to Delta College. This program actively recruits women into the high paying non-traditional careers of service technicians. She was responsible for developing a contract between the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California and San Joaquin Delta College nursing program. It was the first contract of its kind to be developed in California.

Since 2003 Dr. Hill has supervised fee-based Community Education. This program has greatly expanded and provides opportunities for adults and children to expand their interests academically, socially, and recreationally. These workshops improve the quality of life in this community and encompass personal interests.

Dr. Hill represents the 14 community colleges in the Central Region by presently serving on the San Joaquin Valley Veterans Project headed by the Secretary of Labor and the Workforce Development Agency. She serves on the San Joaquin Partnership Business Retention and Expansion committee and is a member of Rotary of Stockton and the United Way Keel Club.

Additional honors for Dr. Hill are 2006 Economic Development Person of the Year from California Community Colleges, 2003 National Telly Awards, 1997 The Courage to Lead Award from the Community College League of California, 1996 Distinguished Public Service Award, 1994 Award for Dedication to Foster Youth & Care Providers, 1993 Susan B. Anthony Women of Achievement Award, to name a few
