It is with great pleasure that we announce the selection of Kristen Spracher-Birtwhistle of Kaiser Permanente as our recipient of the 2002 ATHENA Award in recognition of her professional accomplishments, community service and her role in helping other women in the community attain success. This award honors outstanding professional women, and encourages an environment where providing assistance, inspiration and mentoring to women is uniquely valued. Kristen is the Associate Medical Group Administrator for Kaiser Permanente Stockton-Manteca, and the Satellite Medical Group Administrator, Kaiser Permanente Modesto, and oversees administrative operations of the two facilities. Under her leadership, women of every age and ethnicity in these facilities and departments have been presented with opportunities, promoted to significant positions of responsibility and empowered with the tools to achieve results. She also started "Morning Mentoring Sessions," a mentoring program for women at Kaiser Permanente Stockton, established to extend the education and enhance the career paths of the participants. Kristen is well known for her conception and implementation of the annual Celebration of Women's Wellness, now headed toward its seventh year. She envisioned a woman's forum with nationally acclaimed speakers, and had the determination and drive to see that her vision became a successful reality. Kristen was also instrumental in the development of Su Salud, and instituted the health education component of this health fair. Sandy Stoddard, Community Services Director for the American Cancer Society, is delighted that Kristen will receive the prestigious ATHENA Award. "Kristen was focused on the underserved populations because she knew that lives would be saved with prevention education. I volunteered and worked with her on Su Salud and observed her dedication in helping others," said Stoddard. Kristen contributes her time and expertise to several business related affiliations, including Su Salud, the Dameron Hospital Foundation, San Joaquin County Healthier Communities Coalition, the American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, Kaiser Permanente Latino Association, San Joaquin County Tobacco Prevention Program, San Joaquin County Drug Court, SJC Partnership for Tomorrow and the Business Council's A+ Program. Kristen has received numerous awards throughout the years, including the "Visionary Leadership Award" by the nationwide Kaiser Permanente Latino Association for her advancement of Latino patient care and employee opportunities. Other awards include the Exceptional Employee Contribution Award in 1994, and the Top Ten Service Improvement Award for the Northern California Region in 1995. She was also chosen as the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Business Manager/Operator of the Year in 2002. Past ATHENA honorees include Judith Chambers, Cyril Seligman, Susan Carson, Marian Jacobs, Karen Munro, Iva Harris, Janice Marengo, Bobbie Fasano, Kathleen Janssen, Kathryn Rousek, Jeanette Michaels, Judith Buethe, Ann Johnston, Connemara Reisinger and Charlynn Musick. The ATHENA Award will be presented to Kristen at the Greater Stockton Chamber of Commerce Annual ATHENA Luncheon on December 11, 11:30 AM, at Stockton Golf & Country Club. Tickets for the luncheon are $25 each, pre-paid by December 6, and $30 thereafter. For additional information, call Renna Beinoris at 547-2764, or e-mail to renna@stocktonchamber.org. A
