Stockton Mayor
Edward J. Chavez

Mayor Edward J. Chavez

Mayor Edward J. Chavez was born and raised in Stockton and attended local schools. He obtained an AA from San Joaquin Delta College in 1970, earned a BA in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento in 1972, and a MS in Management from Cal Poly, Pomona in 1992.

Elected in the march 2004 primary election with a majority of the vote, Mayor Chavez was sworn into office in January 2005. Prior to becoming Mayor, he served the Stockton Police Department for over 30 years, the last 10 years as the Chief of Police, providing the unique perspective of an in-depth understanding of the needs of the community and our citizens.

As Mayor, his focus is on involving the community and citizens in local government. The Strong Neighborhoods Initiative, adopted in June 2006, is a primary example of bringing the strength of what government has to offer directly to neighborhoods where people live, and providing resources important to citizens, such as community centers, street lighting, and security.

This past year, the Mayor's Blue Ribbon Crime Prevention Committee has engaged leadership throughout San Joaquin County. Representatives from the entire spectrum of health and human services, law enforcement, and the judicial system, have come together to examine issues, make recommendations, and take action, with the goal of reducing and preventing crime.
